On Friday evening, a dramatic incident occurred at Rome’s historic Colosseum. A 47-year-old American tourist was seriously injured after attempting to climb a fence near the monument and falling onto sharp metal barriers. Authorities reported that the tourist lost balance and fell onto the iron rods.
The tourist, a U.S. citizen residing in Taiwan, had been in Rome for a few days with friends and family. The incident took place around 5:00 PM local time, as crowds gathered near the popular ancient Roman site. It is believed that the tourist was trying to get a closer view of the Colosseum, possibly for a selfie or photo.
Fell onto Sharp Metal Barriers and Remained Trapped in Pain
Witnesses reported that the tourist lost his balance while climbing the fence that separates the public from the restricted area of the ancient monument. He fell onto the pointed metal fence and became trapped, visibly bleeding and in pain. Bystanders immediately called for help.
Emergency services quickly arrived and began a delicate rescue operation that lasted over 20 minutes. During the rescue, the tourist lost consciousness and remained motionless, suspended by the railing. Medical personnel rushed him to San Giovanni Hospital, where he was placed under “red code” conditions due to his critical condition.
Tourist Underwent Surgery for Serious Injuries
The tourist, who sustained severe injuries to his back and spine, underwent emergency surgery. According to Italian media reports, over 80 stitches were needed to treat the wounds. While the tourist’s condition was initially life-threatening, he survived the night, but continued to receive care in the hospital.
Police Investigating the Incident
Authorities have begun an investigation to determine what led the tourist to climb the fence. During interviews, the tourist’s friends were unable to explain why he attempted to cross into the restricted area. The police have not yet confirmed whether any fines or legal actions will be taken.
Tourist Behavior and Safety Concerns Raised
This incident highlights growing concerns about tourist behavior and safety at historical landmarks. Despite warning signs and barriers, risky actions such as attempting to get closer for photos or social media attention remain common. In 2021, two American tourists were fined 800 euros ($905) for illegally entering the Colosseum at night to drink beer. In 2023, two young people who carved their names into the Colosseum’s walls faced fines of up to 15,000 euros ($16,850) and up to five years in prison.
Authorities are reviewing the incident and may consider additional security measures or penalties to protect both visitors and the site.
