Sedir Island, located off the coast of Marmaris in Muğla, is renowned not only for its natural beauty but also for its rich historical heritage. According to legend, Queen Cleopatra of Egypt once walked on these golden sands, specially brought from Egypt by her lover, Mark Antony. This romantic tale gave the island its famous name, Cleopatra Beach. Yet beneath this enchanting shore lies the ancient city of Kedrai, a historical treasure dating back thousands of years.
Kedrai: A Prominent City of the Dorian League
Founded in the 6th century BCE by the Dorians, Kedrai ancient city was one of the key members of the Dorian Hexapolis—a confederation of six powerful city-states in the eastern Aegean. Thanks to its strategic location, Kedrai played a vital role in maritime trade and military affairs. Its strong cultural and political ties with Rhodes made it one of the most influential port cities of its time.
Archaeological excavations reveal a well-organized urban layout, including a spacious agora, monumental temples, and public buildings that highlight the city’s significance during the Classical period. Kedrai continued to flourish through the Hellenistic and Roman eras, adapting to the changing political and cultural landscape.

Religious and Cultural Transformation in the Roman Era
During the Roman period, Kedrai saw the construction of a grand basilica and smaller churches, marking its transition from pagan traditions to early Christianity. Monumental tombs and religious structures provide valuable insights into the social dynamics and spiritual life of its inhabitants, reflecting a multi-layered cultural identity.
2025 Excavations: Unveiling History and Legend
The 2025 excavation season, starting on June 23, will focus for the first time on the grand basilica area. Led by Dr. Sevilay Zeynep Yıldız from Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, these studies aim to deepen our understanding of Kedrai’s architectural and religious heritage.
