The Ancient City of Patara, located in the Kaş district of Antalya, is set to witness the flow of water through its iconic City Gate once again this year, thanks to extensive restoration efforts. Known as the capital of the Lycian League in the 1st century BC, this ancient city has hosted numerous civilizations throughout history, earning it the title of the “cradle of civilizations.”
Among the most remarkable structures in Patara are the council house of the Lycian League, a historic lighthouse, an ancient theater, and the bathhouse commissioned by Emperor Nero. However, the City Gate, standing 19 meters long and 10 meters high, stands out as a symbol of the city. This gate served not only as an entrance but also as a representation of the power of the Roman Empire.
Recent research has revealed that the City Gate was the final link in the city’s waterway system, with water flowing through lead pipes to create a stunning water curtain that cascaded into a pool above the central arch. This visual spectacle provided an unforgettable welcome to visitors in ancient times.
As part of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s “Heritage for the Future Project,” the goal this year is to restore the water flow. Dr. Şevket Aktaş, the head of the Patara Archaeological Excavations, stated that the project aims to uncover the structures surrounding the City Gate and make the area accessible to both researchers and tourists. Aktaş noted, “The City Gate was a monumental structure that welcomed visitors arriving by both land and sea in ancient times.”
This year’s excavation efforts will focus on uncovering the ground in front of the City Gate and the porticoes to the east and west. Additionally, the functions of the shops located behind the western portico will be investigated. The artifacts discovered in these shops will provide valuable insights into the lifestyle of the ancient inhabitants.
Once the excavations are complete, a circulation system will be established to allow water to flow through the area once again. This will enable both researchers and visitors to experience the enchanting atmosphere of ancient Patara.
The efforts to preserve Patara’s rich historical heritage aim to create a valuable cultural legacy for future generations. This ancient city will continue to be a treasure waiting to be discovered by history enthusiasts.
