A routine renovation in the town of Vence, in southern France, has turned into a discovery that could reshape our understanding of Christianity in Europe. Beneath the market halls, archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a massive 5th-century cathedral. Experts describe the find in a single word: “extraordinary.”

The excavations revealed the foundations of a cathedral more than 30 meters long, along with tombs belonging to bishops, priests, and local elites. This discovery shows that Vence was not a modest provincial settlement, but a strategic hub in the spread of Catholicism during the early Middle Ages.

The Intact Baptistery

One of the most striking finds is a nearly untouched octagonal baptistery. Its Roman concrete walls still preserve the original cross-shaped interior. In early Christianity, baptism was performed not by sprinkling water, as in modern Catholicism, but by fully immersing adults. This small structure therefore stands as a living archive of the earliest rituals of the faith.

Layered History: From Rome to the Middle Ages

Beneath the cathedral, archaeologists also found the remains of a Roman-era residence, underscoring the site’s long and layered history. After the cathedral was abandoned in the 11th century, molds for bell casting were installed in its nave, suggesting that the sacred space was never fully forgotten, but adapted for new purposes.

“Once Every 50 Years”

Fabien Blanc-Garidel, head of the Nice Metropolitan Archaeology Service, emphasized the rarity of the discovery:
“Such a comprehensive early Christian complex is unearthed in Europe only once every 50 or 60 years.”

Preserving History Under Glass

Instead of halting development, the Vence municipality has decided to integrate the remains into the new commercial complex. Visitors will be able to view the baptistery through a protective glass floor, while the cathedral apse will be displayed beneath a transparent covering.

A Global Connection

The Vence discovery joins a series of remarkable revelations about early Christianity worldwide. Earlier this month, excavations on Sir Bani Yas Island in Abu Dhabi uncovered a 6th-century monastery and church, proving the endurance of Christianity in the Persian Gulf. Together, these finds illuminate the global reach of the faith, from the deserts of Arabia to the heart of Provence.
